Chinese Investors and the EB-5 Dilemma: Is It Still Worth It in 2026?

For over a decade, Chinese investors were the engine of the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program. At its peak, Chinese nationals accounted for over 80% of all EB-5 visas issued. The appeal was straightforward: invest $800,000 (in a Targeted Employment Area) or $1,050,000 in a U.S. business that creates 10 jobs, and get a green card for your entire family.

But in 2026, the calculus has changed dramatically.

The Backlog Problem

China has a massive EB-5 backlog. The per-country cap means Chinese investors wait significantly longer than applicants from other countries. While the April 2026 Visa Bulletin shows movement in some categories, EB-5 China remains backlogged — some applicants who invested in 2017 or 2018 are still waiting.

That's 7+ years with $800,000 locked in a project, no green card, and no guarantee of timeline.

Is It Still Worth It?

The honest answer: it depends on your alternatives and your timeline. If you're wealthy enough that $800K is a manageable investment and you can wait 5–8 years, EB-5 still provides a path without employer sponsorship. But if you're a skilled professional, the EB-2 NIW or EB-1A routes may be faster and far cheaper.

"I invested $500K in 2016 under the old rules. Ten years later, I'm still waiting. My friend did EB-1A last year and got approved in 8 months. Different paths, different outcomes."
