Advance Parole is a travel document that allows certain noncitizens to travel outside the United States and return without abandoning their pending immigration applications. It is most commonly used by applicants with pending I-485 adjustment of status applications.

2026 Updates

Processing: 3–8 months. Filing fee: $630 (paper) / $580 (online). New $1,000 CBP surcharge applies to some travelers (DACA, some TPS holders). I-485 pending applicants are generally exempt from the surcharge. Combo card (EAD/AP) available.

Who Qualifies

Applicants with pending I-485 adjustment of status, DACA recipients (limited), TPS holders, and certain humanitarian parolees. Apply using Form I-131. Most I-485 applicants receive a combo card combining EAD work authorization and advance parole in a single card.

Travel Risks in 2026

Re-entry on advance parole is at CBP's discretion. With heightened vetting and increasing entry refusals, international travel carries more risk than in prior years. Consult your attorney before any international trip.
